Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association to Host Second Statewide 2018 Fire Officer and Training Officer School in Duluth March 16-18

Conference focuses on developing current and future fire officers of all ranks while promoting
    the newly launched MnFIRE Initiative

MINNEAPOLIS (March 1, 2018) – The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) will host its second Fire Officer & Training Officer School of 2018 in Duluth March 16-18, 2018, at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The conference is held annually in Alexandria – including this year Feb. 9-11 – but due to popular demand and an underrepresentation of departments from the northern part of the state, a second event was added in Duluth. The Minnesota Firefighter Initiative (MnFIRE) – a new statewide advocacy campaign – will have a strong presence at the Duluth officer school, including an exhibit booth and a full-day session featuring leading Minnesota experts in the fields of cardiac, cancer and emotional wellness.

The Fire Officer and Training Officer School is specifically focused on developing current and future officers of all ranks within fire departments to help them improve their abilities while improving fire organizations in Minnesota. The diverse array of classes offer attendees in-depth exploration of the multitude of skills and abilities needed to function in today’s fire service.

A Duluth Fire Officer School highlight and exclusive offering will be an all-day “train the trainer” session on Saturday, March 17, led by MnFIRE President George Esbensen, Vice President Mike Dobesh and Treasurer John Wolff. The session will walk participants through the mission of the Minnesota Firefighter Initiative, giving attendees insight into the hidden dangers of the three health issues. Dr. Paul Anderson will lead a sub-session on cardiac health, Dr. Margaret Gavian will lead a sub-session on cancer and retired Saint Paul Fire Department captain Steve Shapira will lead a sub-session on emotional wellness. There will also be discussion about how the fire service can do better to protect Minnesota's firefighters.

“Bringing MnFIRE to the Duluth Fire Officer School allows us to educate firefighters at all levels about why they need to make their health a priority,” said MnFIRE President George Esbensen. “Cardiac disease, cancer and mental health challenges are more common than firefighters realize – with both direct and indirect impacts – but with the right tools, we can get better at recognizing and preventing these issues.”

Registration is open for the Duluth Fire Officer School, and all classes are approved for MBFTE reimbursements. The school offers:

    • Twelve hours of training and education specifically targeted for fire officers
    • Family-friendly atmosphere
    • Social opportunities to network with fire departments
    • Vendor show
